Take a break from social networks

The cool thing about social networks is that it allows us to stay in touch with people we don’t see very often. Of course it also allows us to stay in touch with people we see all the time. We get to share our memories in real time. They help us learn about the people we meet and then apply that knowledge to strengthen relationships. In some cases we learn information that encourages us to end relationships. But if we aren’t careful our social network replaces our live networks and commands all of our time.

Over the last year  I have read articles about people in the tech sectors who are stepping away from technology for a brief break each week. Some call it a device or social network sabbath.

I think it is a good idea. In fact I like the idea so much that I decided to take a social media sabbath on Sundays. Starting last Saturday I posted a notice to my Facebook friends that I would not participate on any networks the following Sunday.

In the morning I placed my iPad to the side and only used it as an e-reader for books and periodicals. I also decided to limit access to email.

I have to say that I didn’t know how I would get along with out a social fix. What I discovered was a stress free day. I enjoyed my family and friends just a little more. Why? I think it was because I new that contact with the people in my life that day was limited to that time that we were together.

The next day I found that I was able to catch up on all the goings on from the day before. The amazing thing is that I really didn’t care that much. Consequently, I didn’t spend as much time on social media the next day.

Have you ever taken a break a short break from social media? How did it go? Did you break out in hives? Let me know what you think about social media and technology sabbaths in the comments.
