A carefully crafted press release is sent it to all major news outlets.  No one used it, the event, product or service did not get promoted as hoped. Why?

The press release did not get chosen because it was smothered under an avalanche of thousands of press releases. It never had a chance.

Imagine this scenario, the work day begins with email being opened.  There before the eyes of a handful of people are thousands of emails.  A dozen get chosen to move to the next round.  Those spots are reserved for drama.  High drama is possible.  Which means an event in which no one dies, gets hurt or causes some other commotion gets looked over.

What can the writer of the press release do?

More than likely they have a precious commodity at their fingertips, just begging for a chance to get noticed.

Contact info from the people she wants to reach.  Contact info from people who already use the product, service or event.

One idea the person could try is a carefully crafted email campaign.  After all a group of people entrusted her with their email address.  As long as she is careful and respects what has been entrusted to her, there should not be a problem with sending an occasional email.

All of us have an address book, we just need to tap that resource.

We also need to be ready to return the favor for those who have helped us.


The world changed. It sped up, became crowded, and interconnected. To navigate our world, we must think different, we must think bigger!

You no longer compete with the business down the road, you compete with businesses across the globe. The same can be said for jobs, financial opportunities and scarce resources.

Of course your area of opportunity expanded as well. Now you can do business with down the road and across the globe. If your local job market isn’t going well, there is nothing to stop you from applying for a job based in Spain.

 The tools you need are simple: a computer and internet connection. That smart phone in your pocket counts, the bank of computers at the public library also counts.

Why not launch your own global corporation today.

It is really not hard to gain “Likes” and “Friends” and such. Most the time you click a button and BOOM, more. But unless you know the person on the other end on that click, you have only gained an opportunity to connect. That is the hard part. Why? Because it is scary to connect with people.

To connect you have to take a chance of rejection. It works like this; “Hi my name is David. Do you want to be my friend? Do you like tacos, I love tacos.” to which the other person my respond with utter silence. They may say no I don’t want to be your friend. But they may respond; “My name ________. Sure I’ll be your friend, I love tacos. Let me introduce you to some of my other friends.”

Today it is more important than ever to connect, really connect with people. The opportunity to do so is much greater than in the past. I can reach out to someone on the other side of the world. We can build a relationship and make great changes in the world. Or it could lead to a game of chess over email.

Sure it is scary to try to connect. But we have to do it. So here is my challenge. Start going through your connections, read their profiles, visit their websites and blogs, everything they are willing to share and then reach out and say hi. Connect with them. The opportunity we have been waiting for could very well be in our address books right now.

Our thoughts dictate our actions.

The things you do or don’t do determine what clients, coworkers, and family think of you.

When our talk doesn’t match our walk, we have a huge problem and a grand opportunity.

There is an old saying that goes something like this;  “You are what you think of, all day long.”

So what are you thinking about?

Perhaps you’ve seen and heard the reprocessed major form of REM’s Losing My Religion  it certainly blew my mind when I heard it.  I think this might be a good example of purple cow with a l Tong tail.

Seth Godin says if you are traveling down the road and see a bunch of cows you don’t think twice, because cows are boring.  But if see a purple cow you take notice. Therefore in business as in life you want to be a purple cow.

The Long Tail

Chris Anderson‘s book and the original article begins by telling a story of a book about mountain climbing called Touching the Void.  It did okay and then was forgotten.  A decade later another book about mountain climbing, Into Thin Air, comes on the scene.  Its success generates interest in the Touching the Void.  It turns out that the first book was part of Amazon’s recommendations to people who purchased Into Thin Air.

The new reprocessed version of the original song is getting quite a bit of attention.  It’s a purple cow.  Anyone growing up when the song was released remembers the downer notes and somber feel.  The major notes change the imagery in the video.  It changes the whole feel of the song.

After I heard the new version I listened to the old version on my iPod.  I’m certain that I’m not the only one to do so.  What I expect to happen, is that people not familiar with the song or band will check them out.  It should be interesting to see if there is an increase in downloads for the original song.


While not to diminish the amount of work that went into this project, if you have a computer and access to some snazzy software, then you have all the tools to produce a purple cow.  The question is will you?

A recent glance at the job postings on any job board should be proof enough of the same old same old in the job market.  If you want to get that special job, the one you have always dreamed of, then you will have to start producing projects and sharing them with the world.

But you will have to produce better than good projects.  Mediocre simply won’t do anymore.  It’s not enough to show you are able to use the software and plug in cables.  You will have to shine.  You will have to take chances.  That means some of your projects may fail.  Failure is okay.  Failure is good.  Every failure has the potential to move you closer to success.

Now go fire up your Mac, download some way cool software and do something extraordinary.

Cracks in a foundation are almost inevitable.  If left unattended they can grow larger and cause damage.  The trick is to identify cracks in our relationships and tend to them carefully and quickly.

Thinking about the idea of “choose yourself” and what that means.  If you are familiar with Seth Godin, then you are familiar with the idea that we should not wait for someone to choose us.  We should choose ourselves and then create art (as opposed to work).

But how do you apply this concept to the current economic times when jobs seem to be scarce?  I’m going out on a limb and say that there hasn’t been a better opportunity to practice art and be completely brilliant.   After all many people right now have nothing to loose.  Why not take a chance on something a little bit different?

I personally know of people who have lost their job and are facing the reality of having to take a position with less pay and maybe require them to do work they are going to hate.  I was in that position a little over a year ago and thought I would go mad.  I’m urging you to not settle.  Do something no one else is going to do.  Be magnificent.

Remember you are more than just an employee at a company.  You are a free agent and as a free agent you need to make sure that you are employable not just employed.  That means your raising the stakes.  You’re going to do more than learn a new skill.  You’re going to find ways to connect with clients and coworkers and partners.  It means you are ready to receive new opportunities that present themselves to you.

But please keep in mind that the next time you find yourself at a job interview of any sort.  You are not less than the other person.  In fact they should be trying to get you to choose them.  Why, because you are brilliant.

What follows is a list of questions that you might consider asking in your next interview.

1)      How does it make you feel when someone gets something and you don’t?

2)      Describe your typical workday?

3)      How much time do you spend going over the work of those in your department?

4)      Have any favorite books?  Why are they special?

5)      What websites, blogs, magazines and television shows do you use, read and view?

6)      Do you have references?

7)      Can I see a list of projects you have worked on and can you tell me what your role was in the project?

8)      What kind of language do you think is acceptable with clients, coworkers and employees?

9)      How do you keep track of appointments?

10)  What tools do you use to keep up with important information about clients, coworkers and other people in your life?

11)  How do you monitor projects?

I know what you are thinking.  How can I ever go into an interview or performance appraisal and talk to a boss this way.  Again, let me say, you are brilliant.  You have unlimited potential just waiting for a chance to do work that matters.  Dig deep; find the strength to be a super star.  Instead of doing work and completing tasks, turn your work into art and connect.
